2015 Annual Members Meeting Synopsis

We wanted to give you a brief synopsis of our 2015 Annual Meeting and Dinner including several important points made by our Keynote Speakers, AMWA Interim Executive Director Bill Casey and AMWA Lake Patrol Officer Bill Magee.

More changes in store for AMWA

The AMWA Board of Directors meeting on April 8th, 2015, ushered in more changes for the Authority. What follows is a high level summary of some of the events in the meeting that Lake Athens property owners may find of interest. Big changes for AMWA and LAPOA

AMWA Board of Directors Meeting, February 11th, 2015

The AMWA Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday ushered in some significant changes for the Authority, including the resignation of Executive Director Wylie Pirkle and the introduction of new staff members Darlene Forshage (Office Manager/Interim Executive Director) and Joshua Joplin (Police Chief/Building Inspector/Lake Patrol Officer).

The meeting was attended by around 70 people, including County Judge Richard Sanders, County Sheriff Ray Nutt, County Attorney Clint Davis, and Precinct 4 County Commissioner and LAPOA member, Ken Geeslin, all of Henderson County, and Mayor Jerry Don Vaught, City Councilmen Joe Whatley and Charles Elliott, and Police Chief Buddy Hill, all of the City of Athens. After introducing these distinguished guests, AMWA Board of Directors President and LAPOA member, Steve Sparkman, administered the oath of office to AMWA Police Chief Joplin. Read More

2014 LAPOA Annual Members Weekend

The Lake Athens Property Owners Association held its first annual Members Weekend on June 14th and 15th, 2014. Several social events were planned in addition to the Annual Members Meeting and Dinner on Saturday evening.

Even though some events were better attended than others, those members who did attend enjoyed themselves and had positive comments to offer.


Saturday morning – Club Clinics:  Even though there were no registrants for the sailing, rowing and skiing clinics, the sailors were out in force enjoying a windy morning.

It was reported that the Hobie Cats offered an especially exhilarating ride!

In accordance with Lake Athens Property Owners Association Bylaws, this posting serves as notice that we will be holding the 2014 Lake Athens Property Owners Association Board of Directors election in conjunction with the Annual Members Meeting on Saturday evening, June 14th, at the Conservation Center of the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. On Saturday July 13, 2013, the Executive Director of the Athens Municipal Water Authority (AMWA), Wylie Pirkle, met with a group of approximately 60 LAPOA members to address concerns about low water levels. After an informative formal presentation, Mr. Pirkle answered questions from the floor and stayed on to talk with individual property owners.

Mr. Pirkle’s presentation, summarized below, addressed four main topics: the history and purpose of Lake Athens; AMWA’s role; the factors contributing to the lower lake level; and the purpose of the new and proposed wells. (Mr. Pirkle did not address any property tax related issues as that is not in any way under AMWA’s jurisdiction.)

Annual Meeting Summary

Annual MeetingLAPOA’s recent annual meeting on June 8th, 2013 was the most attended annual meeting in LAPOA’s history, with 95 in attendance!  Only the original organizational meeting had a larger attendance.

The new LAPOA was unveiled and the response was overwhelming and positive.  Many new people joined, many purchased t-shirts sporting the new logo, many joined one or more of the new clubs, and new relationships began. Read More
